RDS: Royal Irish Academy

In 1772 those members of the Dublin Society with antiquarian interests formed the "Standing Committee for Enquiry into the Antiquities of Ireland". The Committee was concerned with locating and copying Irish manuscripts held in private collections and libraries in Ireland and on the Continent. The Committee of Antiquities dissolved in the early 1780s becoming the separate body of the Hibernian Antiquarian Society, members of which went on to found the Royal Irish Academy in 1785.
