RDS: First Catalogue of the Dublin Society Library

In 1732 the Dublin Society ordered a catalogue of its collection of books. The Library’s first catalogue includes titles in French, Dutch, English and Latin. The 35 original titles reflect the Society’s interest in agriculture and manufactures.

During the early years of its development the Dublin Society Library received donations and purchased collections at auction. Members of the Society collected books on their travels on the continent and recommended titles that they felt the library should acquire. The Society also exchanged titles with other learned Societies.

By the year 1797 the Dublin Society Library contained over two thousand titles.
