RDS: Samuel 'Premium' Madden (1686-1765)

Samuel Madden (1686-1765) was High Sheriff of Fermanagh and the Rector of Newtown Butler. Madden studied at Trinity qualifying as Doctor of Divinity in 1723. In 1729 Madden published the tragedy "Themistocles". He followed this in 1733 with "Memoir of the Twentieth Century", now credited as one of the first science fiction novels. His nickname "Premium" Madden alludes to the introduction of his premium scheme to the Dublin Society in the 1740s.
